Tumi and the Whispering Baobab

🔊 Listen to this story

Under a giant, silver-barked baobab tree in the golden savanna lived a small pangolin named Tumi. Tumi had shiny brown scales like tiny shields, but whenever anything surprised him, he curled into a tight little ball and hid until the world felt safe again.

One breezy morning, a bright hornbill named Zuzu landed on a branch above him and called out cheerfully, "Good morning, round friend! Would you like to explore the meadow with me?" Startled by the sudden voice, Tumi quickly rolled into a ball, and Zuzu waited patiently nearby, humming a soft tune.

That afternoon, dark clouds rumbled and rain began to pour. Zuzu spotted Tumi curled up under a leaf, shivering, and quickly guided him to a cozy hollow inside the baobab's trunk, tucking dry leaves around him until he felt warm.

Safe and dry, Tumi slowly uncurled and peeked out. "Thank you for finding me," he whispered. Zuzu smiled and said, "Friends look out for each other. You dig up pesky ants that harm the baobab, and I carry its seeds to new places — together we help this old tree grow strong."

From that day on, Tumi didn't hide every time Zuzu visited. Instead, they wandered the savanna side by side, one waddling and one flying, and the whispering baobab seemed to rustle happily above two friends who had found each other at last.
