Tumbi and the Patient Hornbill

🔊 Listen to this story

Under the tall baobab tree, in golden grasslands, lived a small pangolin named Tumbi, her body covered in shiny silver scales. She was very shy, and whenever she felt nervous, she would quickly curl into a tight ball.

Every morning, Kembo, a hornbill with a bright, colorful beak, perched on a branch above her burrow and called out a cheerful greeting. But Tumbi would only peek out for a moment before rolling back into her ball.

One evening, Kembo noticed Tumbi digging near the tree roots, eating tiny ants. Instead of rushing closer, he sat quietly a little distance away and simply waited.

"I only want a friend to watch the sunset with," Kembo said softly. "It's alright that you feel scared — I will wait as long as you need." Touched by his gentle words, Tumbi slowly uncurled and, smiling shyly, told him her name.

From that day on, the two became the best of friends. Kembo shared stories about the colors of the sky, while Tumbi showed him how her digging softened the earth, helping new grass grow. Under the baobab's shade, they learned that true friendship grows from patience and giving each other space.
